PULL OVER is a series where Public Culture interviews slash catches up with our family & friends.

In addition to written articles on blogs here, we will also do this in video format.

In this second issue of the PULL OVER video series, we chatted with the man behind Flowr Pit known as Alfath (or Alfus as what his closest friends & family usually calls him by) at our place to ask about how life is going and his wishes for the upcoming year.

Seeing that the upcoming songs require a full band format, Flowr Pit is now backed by drummer Abi Mulya of Toast, guitarist Edo Alventa of Grrrl Gang, and bassist Dio Pradhana of Kazzmir. The gang of 4 has been rehearsing in the studio and is now ready to rock full force in 2022.

Take a peek at our short interview with him below.

Q: What’s the inspiration behind the name Flowr Pit?

Alfath: Uh, that’s actually meaningless. I like to read and find random words, then I usually just write them on my phone (trust me there’s a lot). One of it was Flowr pit in which both words has made it into the list. When I was making this solo project, I was sort of emo, or at least at my emo phase and I thought that the name “Flowr Pit” was quite cute. That’s basically it. And just FYI, it’s not a typo. It is supposed to be spelled F L O W R .

Q: Worst performance ever, and why?

Alfath: Worst performance? Uh.. actually so far we’ve never had a performance that would be considered as the worst. But, I guess.. worst performance, well I’m not gonna tell you where exactly, but the sound acoustics wasn’t the best so I didn’t have the most comfortable experience either.

Q: Do you have a wish list of where you would like to perform?

Alfath: I would love to be able to play at Big Day Out Australia. Because the music scene there, from what I’ve seen, seems to align with what Flowr Pit produces. So I guess, hopefully… I would be able to perform there. Amen..

Q: Whats your wish for 2022?

Alfath: My main wish is that Corona will end soon, that’s honestly it. Right? Everyone agrees, right? That’s it, so that everything can go back to normal, we can play at gigs again; well actually some have already started playing, but I’m honestly still afraid. That’s my main wish. My wish for Flowr Pit is.. hopefully plans for our album will go as planned, we’ll have the chance to perform again, and hopefully everyone stays healthy. That’s all…

Q: Besides being a musician what do you do?

Alfath: My 9 to 5 job… Well not literally 9 to 5, but I work as an audio engineer, sometimes as a music producer, and I also have my own studio, called “PEPPERONI STUDIO”. Then I do some post production services as well. Uh, other than that, I am also involved in Kareem Soenharjo’s band if you’ve ever heard, called Bapak,  hough it’s currently inactive… That’s all, besides that I only do audio engineering.

Q: What does happiness mean to you?

Alfath: Happiness, happiness. Happiness is when you get to spend some quality time with your loved ones. No matter where it is, or when it is. But it depends on who it is though, right? Well anyways, happiness for me is when you get to do what you love for a living.

Q: When was the last time you cried?

Alfath: The last time I cried was probably- Oh! I remember, the most recent one was when I watched Spider-Man: No Way Home, man. Spoiler alert! That scene where all the Toby Ma- Oops not Toby Maguire, where all the Peter Parkers showed up, I was like, damn I grew up with these movies and these stars. It just kinda hit me right at the spot. Plus it was at the theater. It’s been a long time since I’ve cried at the theater.

Q: If you were the last living man on the earth, what would you do?

Alfath: That’s dark… I think the best thing I can do is to join everyone else. Like- I mean there’s nobody there, why should I still be here? (laugh) Like what would I do? I think that’s my priority. But if I do have to continue living my life, I’d probably go to the beach and make some surfboards till I get old. At least, then I can spend my time in a place that is happy. Damn.

Q: Your Favorite local food?

Alfath: Local? Nasi padang, like- you can see it. Nasi padang; what you do is pour a Gule dressing on the top of your rice. For toppings I’m a pretty simple guy, add some Paru and an egg (a must) and that’s already so good. Do you know the gravy with the green leaves? Yeah, that. Add some of that, and that is my essential happiness pack.

Q: What’s the meaning of love to you?

Alfath: Love, what is love? Baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me no more. To be honest I’m so confused, love, what is love? Love is (laugh) uh.. I honestly don’t know, I don’t know what love is. Or maybe this, when someone listens to you, you could call it love. That’s love for me. When someone listens, really listens. As simple as that.
